Chalk One Up for the Software Folks

We’ve come to know Dan Gilmore and Supply Chain Digest well over the course of 2007.  In his August 16th edition, Dan writes in his First Thoughts column about The 8 Reasons Companies Are Buying SCM Software . He delivers a bit of good news – especially for us geeks who make a living developing supply chain software!

Dan states, “these are good times for supply chain software providers, and that means companies like yours must be buying”.   I believe he has hit the head on the nail with his assessment.  There does seem to be a very strong trend to move toward technology solutions for just about everything these days.  This is not necessarily native to transportation alone, but spans across multiple industries.  I’ve even spent a good amount of time researching possible software solutions for my own use in marketing, public relations and event management efforts.  The web-based apps are especially interesting. Across the board, so many software providers now seem to realize the value of delivering the products as hassle -free hosted online services.  Has this been client driven?

The article goes on to list “catalysts behind the kinds of investments others are making in supply chain technology” and I definitely recommend that you look it over on your own.  It’s a good read and worth your time if you, like many others, are evaluating your technology solutions.

In contrast to Dan’s column, I find myself asking about the other end of the spectrum – what about when times were bad for supply chain software companies?   Were there any factors you can remember that might have caused companies to shy away from significant supply chain technology investments in the past?

We’d like to hear your stories and opinions, so please feel free to post a comment.
